A weak front northwest of the state will keep winds light through the weekend. This front will push slowly southward through Kauai and Oahu Sunday night and Memorial Day, before stalling out and dissipating over the central and eastern islands by mid week. High pressure will build north of the state in the wake of the front, allowing the trade winds to return for much of next week. Updated: 05/28/2016 3:53 am HST

Light trade winds will continue over the state as the pressure gradient weakens across the area. Showers, some locally heavy, will remain focused over the windward slopes today. Widespread afternoon sea breezes will trigger isolated heavy downpours, mainly over interior and mauka sections, as the atmosphere becomes increasingly unstable. A more stable but humid, hybrid trade wind and weak afternoon convective pattern will prevail on Thursday, followed by light and variable winds with land and sea breeze weather regime heading into the weekend. Moderate to at times locally breezy trade winds will dominate the weather across the state through this weekend. Low clouds and showers carried by the trades will remain focused over windward and mauka areas, with brief showers occasionally passing over leeward sections of some islands. Moisture associated with a stalled and weakening front near Maui county will keep most windward skies cloudy into early next week, with showers most active over windward portions of Maui county. These clouds and showers are expected to gradually diminish later in the week. Also, moderate to locally breezy northeast trade winds will prevail for several days before easing after mid-week. On most of the Big Island, limited moisture embedded in a lighter easterly trade wind flow will bring fewer windward showers, with the Hamakua coast the most likely recipient of rainfall associated with the front. Breezy trade winds will persist across the island chain into Wednesday. Low clouds and showers carried by the trades will favor windward and mauka sections, with an increase in trade showers expected later today and tonight. A late season front approaching Kauai from the northwest Thursday and Friday will cause winds across the state to weaken and veer from the southeast. This will allow local afternoon sea breezes and nighttime land breezes to develop by the end of the work week. The front is expected to weaken as it reaches Kauai, with locally breezy northeasterly trade winds returning to the state this weekend. Updated: 05/03/2016 4:07 am HST
