A surface ridge just north of the state will keep winds light, leading to onshore sea breezes and interior clouds and showers during the afternoon. A cold front to the northwest will weaken as it moves across Kauai tonight, then dissipate over the central islands on Wednesday. Another front will approach late in the week, also dissipating over the islands Friday night into Saturday. A weak surface ridge will build just north of the state over the weekend. Strong high pressure north of the state will keep a windy east- northeast trade wind flow in place through the weekend. The trades will slowly weaken through Christmas week, as a cold front approaches the islands from the west. The front will dissipate north of the state by the end of next week, as another area of strong high pressure builds in, strengthening the trade flow once again. Clouds and showers will remain focused primarily across windward and mauka areas, but some of the heavier showers will make it into leeward areas, particularly over the weekend and into early next week when the trade winds will be at there peak intensity. Thanks to a front approaching from the northwest, a mixed weather pattern will affect the islands into early next week. Light to moderate southeasterlies are expected across windward areas while a mild convective regime is expected across leeward areas. The front will stall before reaching the islands and then lift off to the north early next week. A new high will build northeast of the islands and bring back locally breezy trade winds by the middle of next week. Updated: 12/12/2015 9:59 am HST

Gusty trade winds will give way to light winds and muggy weather over the weekend as a surface trough forms west of Kauai. Also, expect some afternoon showers over the interior areas of the smaller islands and the lee side of the Big Island over the weekend. Moderate trades are expected to return Monday.

A surface ridge north of the area will move closer to the islands today with potential for sea breezes to develop. This could bring periods of clouds and showers over leeward and interior areas this afternoon and again on Tuesday. A new high will bring back breezy trade winds by mid-week. A ridge aloft will keep the atmosphere stable through the week with rainfall amounts remaining low in general. Updated: 12/07/2015 3:40 am HST
