A surface ridge will remain nearly stationary north of the area and maintain trade winds over the islands. A surface trough moving over the area from the southeast will bring showery weather and lighter winds through the middle of the coming week. Winds will strengthen as the surface trough moves west but a trough aloft and lingering tropical moisture will keep showers active through the second half of the week.

Tropical Storm Lester continues to move away from the Hawaiian Islands, taking away most of the heavy weather with it. Its departure has left us with one more feature that all islands will be dealing with for the next 24 hours, and that is a band of weather that includes isolated thunderstorms. The last of this band will clear Kauai by Monday afternoon. A stable air mass will fill in behind with a trade wind flow and persist through the rest of the new week.

Moderate trade winds will continue for the next couple of days as high pressure persists north of the state. A much drier airmass is expected over the islands today and tonight, with shower activity limited primarily to windward and mauka locales. By the middle of the week, a more unsettled weather pattern is expected to overspread the state, as we begin to feel impacts from Hurricane Madeline. Hurricane Lester may affect the islands over the upcoming Labor Day weekend, keeping the conditions unsettled across the Aloha state.

Winds will gradually decrease and veer toward the southeast during the next couple of days as high pressure weakens far to the northeast of the state and a trough develops northwest of the state. This will allow increasingly widespread afternoon seabreezes to develop. Showers will become more frequent, especially during the afternoons and early evenings, as a moist and somewhat unstable airmass moves across the area. Locally heavy rainfall and isolated thunderstorms will be possible on the Big Island during the afternoons early this week. High pressure will rebuild northeast of the area late this week, with a drier trade wind weather pattern returning to the islands Thursday and Friday.

High pressure well northeast of the state will keep a light to moderate trade wind flow in place through Sunday. The trades will weaken during the first half of next week, with some deep tropical moisture overspreading the islands and resulting in some more unsettled weather. A more typical trade wind pattern will then return late next week as high pressure strengthens well to the north of the island chain.

A surface high to the north will keep trade winds blowing over the islands through the coming week. The trades will carry areas of tropical moisture over the islands while a passing low aloft will make the atmosphere unstable. Tropical Depression Darby will continue to bring unsettled weather to western portions of the state this morning as the system tracks northwestward and away from the Aloha state. Improving conditions are then expected to spread across the island chain from east to west through tonight. Hot and muggy conditions will continue through the week. Trade winds will remain through today, bringing morning showers with clearing expected by the afternoon. Winds will become light from Sunday into Tuesday as the remnant low of Celia passes a couple hundred miles north of the islands. Deep tropical moisture will move over the islands from Sunday through Wednesday, fueling locally heavy showers for both windward and leeward areas. A weak front northwest of the state will keep winds light through the weekend. This front will push slowly southward through Kauai and Oahu Sunday night and Memorial Day, before stalling out and dissipating over the central and eastern islands by mid week. Moisture associated with a stalled and weakening front near Maui county will keep most windward skies cloudy into early next week, with showers most active over windward portions of Maui county. These clouds and showers are expected to gradually diminish later in the week. Also, moderate to locally breezy northeast trade winds will prevail for several days before easing after mid-week. On most of the Big Island, limited moisture embedded in a lighter easterly trade wind flow will bring fewer windward showers, with the Hamakua coast the most likely recipient of rainfall associated with the front. Low clouds and showers carried by the trades will favor windward and mauka sections, with an increase in trade showers expected later today and tonight. A late season front approaching Kauai from the northwest Thursday and Friday will cause winds across the state to weaken and veer from the southeast. This will allow local afternoon sea breezes and nighttime land breezes to develop by the end of the work week. High pressure building north of the islands will bring a surge in trade winds, as well as increasing clouds and showers, through Monday. While most of the showers will favor windward areas, the strengthening trade winds will push showers to leeward portions of the smaller islands. The increased winds and showers will affect Kauai and Oahu today, spreading to Maui county and the Big Island tonight and Monday. The increased moisture will move south of all islands by Tuesday, with moderate trade winds delivering just a few brief windward showers for the remainder of the upcoming week.
