Light to moderate trades will gradually return today and remain in place through Sunday with limited showers focusing over windward and mauka areas. A series of weak fronts will approach the islands next week resulting in intervals of land and sea breeze weather interrupted by periods of light to moderate trade winds. A surface ridge in the vicinity of the aloha state will maintain light winds and mostly dry conditions today. A weak front passing from west to east across the smaller islands from late tonight through Wednesday will bring low clouds and a chance of showers. This will be followed by dry northerly flow filling in behind the front. Trade winds will return Thursday and Friday, which will focus low clouds and light trade showers mainly along windward facing terrain. A weak surface ridge will persist near the main Hawaiian islands through Thursday. Weather for the state will remain mostly dry and dominated by daytime sea breezes and nighttime land breezes. Trade winds will increase today, becoming locally breezy this afternoon through Tuesday. Moisture associated with a dissipating front is expected to bring an increase in windward showers starting this afternoon on Kauai, and across the remainder of the state from tonight through Tuesday night. Winds will shift to the southeast and weaken on Wednesday, with light winds and afternoon seabreezes then prevailing into next weekend. Additional fast moving fronts may bring periods of increased showers toward the end of the week, and again during the upcoming weekend. Updated: 01/04/2016 3:38 am HST

High pressure north of the state will slowly settle southward towards the islands through the weekend. The next cold front will shift southward near or over the island chain early next week, before dissipating by mid week. Another cold front will approach the islands by the end of the work week.
