A trough of low pressure running from southwest to northeast through the Alenuihaha channel will remain nearly stationary through the day. The trough will then slowly retrograde westward back across the central and western islands through the end of the work week, keeping unsettled weather in place across the state. High pressure will become more dominant over the weekend and into early next week, reducing the shower activity and confining it to primarily windward and mauka locales.

Moderate, locally gusty trades will keep showers focused over windward and mauka areas during the next several days. The southern portions of the aloha state will see more shower activity as a weak surface trough passes just to the south. The trough will strengthen west of Kauai heading into the weekend. Fresh to strong trade winds will persist over the islands through the weekend. Showers will favor the windward and mountain areas, but the trade winds will carry some of the showers leeward at times across the smaller islands. Winds will veer toward the southeast and weaken early next week as a front approaches the islands from the northwest, with a land and sea breeze pattern developing by Tuesday. Gentle southeast winds will allow sea breezes to prevail across the western part of the state today, while more typical trade wind conditions prevail around Maui county and the Big Island. A surface trough west of Kauai will continue to bring clouds and scattered showers to western parts of the state today.
